A few years ago, a shared position opened up in both Wanganui and Hawera for a graduate Optometrist. I was fairly apprehensive about relocating to the lower North, and leaving behind a big-city lifestyle.
To my surprise, the move became very positive. I enjoy both Wanganui and Hawera and the unique personalities of each. I feel very fortunate to have been welcomed into two very warm and friendly communities. A couple of years, a partner and one cat later I now call the Lower-North my home.
In Optometry, we aim to provide solutions of genuine benefit, and can really help people in their everyday lives. The role the Optometrist plays within the healthcare sector has changed over the last two decades. I have enjoyed this expansion and the learning that goes hand in hand with an increased scope of care.
I am interested in myopia control, and the new therapies we can offer children to slow down their short-sight. I also enjoy the management of dry eye, both using technology and through medical means. As an ACC registered treatment provider, I regularly use prescription medications to treat eye disease and infection.
Since moving to the Lower North I spend more and more of my time outdoors and in the garden. I have apparently developed a newfound appreciation for livestock; two sick lambs appeared on my doorstep a few months ago and seem to have found a home in my backyard.
I try to live healthy and train regularly for fitness. I’m always keen to try something new. My next goal is to make the trip up Mount Taranaki!
